1994 F350 -- use existing lines and valve? 1 Year, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi all,

very glad I found this site.

I have a 1994 model year F350. I bought it with two diesel tanks, so there's two sets of 2 fuel lines (supply and return) that go through a distributor switching valve which is controlled by a switch on the dash.

I pulled out one of the tanks and have installed an 85 gallon tank with heat exchanger for WVO.

Wondering how much of the old stuff I can use, i.e. especially the switching valve and the lines into and out of it.

I have a utility bed so I plan to put filters, pumps etc in a tool box with lots of room. Is there a schematic or design for the model I have?

Wondering where to go from here.

thanks a lot for all the shared knowledge.

I thought that I saw a response to this already but it appears to have disappeared!

You could convert similarly to the 1999-2003 7.3 and add an independent fuel system but I would say that you are pretty much good to go. The fuel rail in the head will act as a final heat exchanger. I can't comment on the quality of the valves that are on your stock setup but I don't see why they wouldn't work. My only concern I have with the stock setup is that you will have to deal with significant switchover/purge time. The lift pump and fuel filter will have to be clear of WVO before it is safe to shut down.

Thanks Leon,

I will check out the 99-03 conversion plans.

Regarding the purge time; a friend who has a three yr old system has to manually switch over to diesel a good five minutes before shutting down. He just has the habit and it's not too burdensome. Is that the sort of timeframe you are thinking I would need?

Also, a question regarding heat. My truck runs very cold. It has an intercooler and just doesn't get hot very fast. I'm worried that it will take a long time to get heat to the heat exchanger back in the tank. Do you recommend an electric heater to boost the startup temp? Or is there a way to tell the thermostat to wait a few degrees more before opening the radiator?

Thank you again

I thought that it is a normally aspirated engine?

You could get a 205F thermostat apparently that is what international initially designed the engine to run at. They are reasonably easy to find.

If you need to purge the filter, lines and fuel rail I would think that you would be talking about half a gallon, that would translate conservatively into about 10miles. 5 minutes sounds a bit short but maybe not by much. Your truck will tell you if you are trying to start it on vegetable oil on a cold morning.

A higher temp thermostat sounds good. I'll try to find one.

The intercooler was a stock option, I believe. The original owner had a bunch of bells and whistles added to the truck.

Any thoughts on an electric heating element to supplement the coolant heat exchanger?

Ha ha, yes I bet it will!!

I only use a hotfox in the tank, a heat plate on the pump, an electric heater wrap on the filter. I use a thermal switch on the engine for a go signal and feel that if I can get the oil to the hot engine, that is really all that I am concerned with. The fuel rail in the head will control the temp anyway. I have found that heating the filter (or the oil in it) is the most critical issue.
