TOPIC: water heater element

water heater element 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I have not started my conversion yet and was wondering abount the possibility of going against the grain. If instead of running coolant all the way to my trunk I was considering running power back there to a water heater element. This would have its own thermostat and would heat much quicker. This would allow the oil to flow to a heated filter and maybe a FPHE up in the front to get correct operating temperatures. Does anyone know anyone who may have already attempted this? Thoughts?
PS I'm also a little curious about the draw on the alternator, but I could get a bigger one right?...

Yes, you can but understand the limitations in available power.
A water heater will not work out well on 12V. I could show the math but an element that is 1200W@120V will be only 1W@12V. :: Probably not enough to feel warm.

The other issue is that the current to drive any significant heater will be very high. I would feel that 120W would be a safe limit at 10amps. 240W at 20Amps starts to get scary. The alternator should put out 50-100 amps but the battery can do 200-500 (for long enough to cause trouble)

Finally, to quote an electrical engineer I worked with in truck design "All fires are electrical fires". So be careful and properly size and fuse the wire.

What if this were to be a type of block heater? If i were to rig it up to be plugged in at home so that it would have a faster switchover time, would this be safe?

Ohh, that is a great idea.
I think it would be very useful for people in northern climates to liquefy their wvo on cold days. However, switchover should be a function of engine temperature not WVO temperature:: You need to get the oil to the engine but the engine needs to be hot enough to burn it properly.
