[edit] Diesel Engine Basics
It's the fuel system that sets "Diesel" engines apart from "Gasoline" engines. Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chambers and air flow is unrestricted through the intake. Engine power is controlled by controlling the amount of fuel injected. Then, of course, there are no spark plugs. The fuel injected ignites due to high temperatures from compression.
In order to burn a heavy oil alternative to diesel fuel, two issues need to be addressed.
1) Heat is required to thin the oil so that it can flow to the engine.
2) The engine needs to be hot enough to completely combust the heavy oil.
Below is a collection of technical details of a variety of common diesel vehicles including, ultimately, detailed conversions to safely run a heavy oil as an alternative fuel.
NOTE: WVO/SVO conversion is simply an additional fuel system for the alternative fuel and a method of switching between the two. The engine is not modified in any way and typically this can be done by a suitably motivated handy-man or woman. In most cases, the "kit" purchased from "conversion manufactures" will be no different than the components that you can purchase independently for hundreds if not thousands of dollars less. It is the goal of this site to collect and, if necessary, produce this information for the free use of the community.
